Declared that Putin will be re-elected with 90% of the votes, Peskov accuses

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has claimed that the New York Times misquoted him in a recent interview in which he was attributed as saying that Vladimir Putin would be "re-elected next year with more than 90% of the vote ".

He is also quoted as saying that Russia's political system "isn't really a democracy, it's a costly bureaucracy."

Elections are due in Russia in September, with Vladimir Putin widely expected to stay in office after his only real opposition, Alexei Navalny, was jailed for another 19 years for extremism last week.

Peskov's comments have been widely discussed on social media, with some users suggesting they stand as evidence of election manipulation.

However, Peskov told the TASS news agency that "no [I did not say that], this was absolutely misinterpreted by the author of this article."

He tried to clarify his comments by saying that the level of support for the president is absolutely unprecedented and therefore his re-election is unquestionable.

" If Putin is nominated, he will be re-elected by a large margin, there is little doubt about that. But elections are democracy, the president himself spoke about this in his speech ", he added.
