
Pope Francis has called on young people around the world to keep alive their hopes and dreams for a better future, during the closing mass of World Youth Day.
"Do not be afraid," the pope repeated several times. Pope Francis told young people that they are urgently needed in a world surrounded by so many problems.
About 1.5 million believers attended the outdoor mass in the "Tejo" park of the Portuguese capital.
Almost the same number of people attended an outdoor prayer vigil on Saturday evening, with many spending the night in sleeping bags and camping mats in the park.
Pope Francis announced at the end of the Mass that the next World Youth Day in 2027 will be held in the South Korean capital, Seoul.
It will be the second time that World Youth Day is held in Asia, after the 1995 World Youth Day in Manila.
