The former vice president of the United States from the Republican Party, Mike Pence, has not ruled out the possibility of being a witness for the prosecution if his former boss Donald Trump ends up on trial on charges of orchestrating a criminal conspiracy to overturn the defeat his 2020 presidential election. Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges on August 3.
Before and during the certification of Biden's victory in Congress on January 6, 2021, Pence oversaw proceedings in his ceremonial role as president of the US Senate. He faced great pressure from Trump to annul the election result, but he refused.
Some of Trump's supporters, who rioted at the US Capitol, chanted "hang Mike Pence!"
That constant pressure and the "simultaneous notes" that Pence took during the proceedings and riots on January 6, 2021, are frequently cited in last week's indictment against Trump.
At one point, the indictment refers to a Jan. 1, 2021 phone call in which Trump berated Pence for not participating in the plan to overturn the election results.
"You are very honest," Trump told Pence. Pence's possible testimony and his notes could become key parts of the prosecution's case against Trump.
For the first time in the primary campaign, Trump attacked Pence on Saturday. He denied that he had rated him as "very honest" but called him now "little Mike Pence".
Pence's presidential campaign has failed to take off so far, and he is in danger of not even making it to the first Republican presidential debate later this month due to a lack of donors.
While he has fallen far behind, Trump is leading the Republican race convincingly, having enjoyed a surge in the polls each time he has been impeached.
