Democrats accuse Trump of exceeding his authority on Iran

The top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee rejected US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's claim last week that the ongoing ceasefire in the Iran war constituted a "pause" in the 60-day period in which the president is constitutionally allowed to use force abroad without congressional authorization.

"The language of the statute does not provide for a break in the term like in a football game. The president must enforce the law," Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed said on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday.

Reed noted that under the War Powers Act of 1973, the 60-day deadline can be extended by another 30 days if the administration argues it is necessary to safely withdraw, however, Reed said, this must be requested by the president.

"We need to be notified. No such notifications are coming. The president is ignoring the law ," he said.

Trump sent a letter to congressional leaders on Friday insisting that hostilities in the war had "ended" at the start of the ceasefire, repeating arguments he and his top officials have made.

Reed said that, while he disagreed with former President George W. Bush's choice to invade Iraq, his administration came to Congress and gave him the opportunity to speak and decide, as well as giving him the legitimacy that this president lacks.
