Death penalty in the US, Trump allows executions by firing squad

The United States is tightening its stance on the death penalty. The U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday that executions by firing squad will be allowed again. Attorney General Todd Blanche had previously authorized applications for the death penalty against nine individuals. That prompted the department to lift a moratorium on federal executions that dates back to the presidency of Joe Biden.

A statement from the ministry said the measures include "expanding the protocol to include further methods of execution, such as firing squad, as well as improving internal processes to expedite death penalty procedures."

The previous administration failed in its duty to protect the American people,” Blanche declared. It refused “to carry out the final sentence against the most dangerous criminals, including terrorists, child murderers, and police killers.

Under President Trump's leadership, the Department of Justice is once again enforcing the law and standing with victims." In 5 states (Idaho, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Utah) shooting with firearms is now permitted.

Critics consider the shooting to be an inhumane and error-prone method of execution. The reason is that the condemned person is tied to a chair with a hood over his head, while three armed prison officers shoot at him through an opening in the wall. They aim for the heart, which is previously marked on their body.

The death penalty can be imposed at the federal level throughout the United States, regardless of individual state laws. However, it is used relatively rarely. Specifically, not a single execution was carried out at the federal level between 2003 and 2019. However, the use of the death penalty continued in individual US states during this period.

Donald Trump first took office as President of the United States in 2017. Under his administration, federal executions resumed in July 2020. His successor, Joe Biden, reversed this decision. In 2021, Attorney General Merrick Garland imposed a moratorium that temporarily halted further federal executions. This moratorium is no longer in effect.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC), there have been a total of 16 executions nationwide in the US in recent years, 13 of them within a six-month period between July 2020 and January 2021. In all cases, the execution was carried out by lethal injection. This is now expected to change.
