The journalist's body was found on January 3 in Chhattisgarh state when authorities managed to trace his cellphone signal after his family alerted the police about his disappearance.
Three people have been arrested in connection with the case.
More than 10,000 people have been killed in the insurgency by Maoist rebels, who say they are fighting for the rights of marginalized indigenous people in India's resource-rich central regions.
Vishnu Deo Sai, chief minister of Chhattisgarh state and a member of India's ruling party, called the journalist's death "tragic" and promised the "severest punishment" for those responsible.
Last year, India was ranked 159 out of 180 in Reporters Without Borders' global press freedom rankings.
