Four soldiers testify to executions, torture and what they describe as suicide missions on the front lines in Ukraine

Four Russian soldiers have exposed to the BBC the harshness and brutality of conditions on their side of the front line in Ukraine. Two of them told the BBC they saw soldiers executed on the spot for refusing orders.
One of them told the documentary team that he saw a soldier being executed on the orders of his commander, who was declared a "Hero of Russia" in 2024.
“I saw it, just two meters, three meters away… click, crack, bam,” he said.
Another soldier, from a different unit, says he saw his commander shoot four men himself.
“I knew them,” he says of the executed soldiers. “I remember one of them shouting: 'Don't shoot, I'll do anything!'”
One of them also says he saw 20 bodies of soldiers lying in a pit after being “zeroed” by their comrades. The term “zero” is Russian military slang for the execution of one’s own soldiers.
In the documentary “The Zero Line: Inside Russia’s War,” the men give detailed accounts of how they were tortured after refusing to take part in what they describe as near-self-sacrifice missions. Russian soldiers call these attacks “meat storms,” as waves of men are relentlessly sent across the front line to consume Ukrainian forces.
The BBC believes this is the first time that Russian soldiers from the front line have publicly stated that they saw commanders order the executions of their soldiers.
One of the men, who was tasked with identifying and counting the dead, presented detailed lists showing that he is the only survivor of a group of 79 men with whom he was mobilized. He says that after he refused to go to the front line, he was tortured and urinated on. Others in his unit who refused orders, he says, were electrocuted, starved and then forced to participate in unarmed “meat storms.”
The four men, who are on the run, told of the horrors they witnessed in an undisclosed location outside Russia.
Almost any public opposition to President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine has been suppressed in Russia. Moscow does not publish official casualty figures, but the UK Ministry of Defence estimates that more than 1.2 million Russian troops have been killed or wounded since the full invasion began on 24 February 2022.

Para luftës, 35-vjeçari punonte si mësues për fëmijë me nevoja të veçanta dhe autizëm në Kungur, në malet Urale. Në maj 2024, policia shkoi në shtëpinë e prindërve të tij dhe e njoftoi se ishte mobilizuar.
Ai thotë se u mobilizua së bashku me 78 burra të tjerë në një qendër rekrutimi në qytetin e Perm-it.
“Pothuajse të gjithë ishin të dehur,” thotë ai, duke shtuar “përpara në betejë! Do ta kapim Zelenskyn dhe do të ngremë flamurin tonë!”, kujton ai që thërrisnin.
“Po i shikoja dhe mendoja: ‘Si përfundova këtu?’ Isha shumë i frikësuar.”
Me mbërritjen në Ukrainë, Ilya thotë se shumica e burrave u dërguan menjëherë në vijën e parë të frontit. Ai thotë se nuk donte të qëllonte apo të vriste askënd dhe përfundoi në një post komandimi.
Kushtet ishin të ashpra dhe ai thotë se pa katër persona të qëlloheshin nga afër nga një komandant – një në Panteleimonivka dhe tre në Novoazovsk, të dyja në rajonin e Donetskut të pushtuar nga Rusia – sepse kishin braktisur vijën e frontit dhe refuzuan të ktheheshin.
“Gjëja më e trishtueshme është se i njihja. Më kujtohet njëri prej tyre që bërtiste: ‘Mos qëllo, do të bëj gjithçka!’ por ai i zeroi gjithsesi,” thotë Ilya.
Sipas tij, “zeroimi” kryhej zakonisht si ndëshkim për refuzim urdhrash dhe si mjet frikësimi për të tjerët.
“Fati yt varej nga komandanti. Ai ishte në radio: ‘Zeroje këtë, zeroje atë’,” thotë ai.
Ekzekutimet e ushtarëve që refuzonin urdhrat, sipas dëshmive, nuk kufizoheshin vetëm në njësinë e Ilyas.
“Sigurisht që i vrasin njerëzit e tyre, është diçka normale,” thotë Dima.
Para luftës, 34-vjeçari jetonte me gruan dhe vajzën e tij dhe punonte në Moskë si riparues lavatriçesh. Në tetor 2022, ai thotë se po lëvizte nga një punë në tjetrën kur një grup policësh e ndaloi.
“Ata panë pasaportën time, bënë diçka në laptop dhe më thanë: ‘Nëse nuk shkon në ushtri, do të shkosh në burg’,” kujton ai.
Dima thotë se nuk donte të vriste askënd, kështu që, megjithëse nuk kishte përvojë mjekësore, iu bashkua një njësie paramedike. Më vonë u transferua në një brigadë ku evakuonte të plagosurit nga vija e frontit.
Ai thotë se në Brigadën e 25-të pa ushtarë të ekzekutoheshin me urdhër të komandantit të tij.
"I saw it – just two meters, three meters away. Just murder, click, crack, bam. It's not drama, it's not a movie, it's real life," he says.
Dima's commander, Alexei Ksenofontov, was decorated with the "Gold Star", the highest state medal, and was declared a "Hero of Russia" in 2024.
However, Ksenofontov has been denounced by relatives of soldiers killed in his unit. In a joint letter in January 2025, they directly appealed to Putin to investigate allegations of brutality.
Dima calls Xenofontov "butcher".
"He gave a lot of orders to kill soldiers, a lot of blood on his hands."
He also describes seeing the bodies of 20 men, who had arrived at the base the night before, lying in a ditch after being shot.
"Twenty guys were brought to us. They just took their bank cards and killed them," he says.
