US President Donald Trump's administration has canceled $400 million in grants and contracts for Columbia University in New York City due to inaction in the face of ongoing harassment of Jewish students.
The General Services Administration accuses the university of failing to protect Jewish students from anti-Semitic acts during pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campus.
Columbia has been at the center of college protests, in which demonstrators demanded an end to U.S. support for Israel due to civilian deaths and the humanitarian crisis caused by Israel's attack on Gaza.
There were accusations of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia at the protests and counter-protests. Colombia has previously said it has made efforts to address anti-Semitism.
“ The cancellation of these taxpayer funds is our strongest signal yet that the federal government will not be a party to an educational institution like Columbia that fails to protect Jewish students and staff,” said Leo Terrell, who heads the Justice Department’s anti-Semitism task force. It was not immediately clear which grants and contracts were being cut.
The university is accused of failing to protect Jewish students from anti-Semitic acts during pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campus.
“These cuts represent the first set of actions, with more to come,” four federal agencies wrote in a press release, denouncing “inaction in the face of ongoing harassment of Jewish students .”
The announcement came five days after federal agencies announced they were considering orders to end $51 billion in contracts with the City University of New York and review its eligibility for more than $5 billion in federal grants.
