The European Union counts on Serbia as a reliable European partner, which shares the same principles and values, said European institutions after the announcement that Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
" Serbia is a candidate country and is negotiating membership in the EU. This means that the country must adapt to the EU acquis communautaire, including harmonization with the common foreign policy and restrictive measures against Russia, " the EU press release states.
After his phone call with Putin, Vučić declared on March 7 that Moscow supports elected institutions in Serbia and the Republika Srpska entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Serbian president said that he and his Russian counterpart discussed the situation in Serbia and the region, as well as other important issues, including reaching a new agreement on gas supplies with Russia and US sanctions against the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS).
The Serbian leader also said that his meeting with Putin in Moscow on May 9 has been confirmed.
Through a video address published on Instagram, Vučić said that he also talked with the Russian president about "the effort for a colorful revolution in Serbia."
This is how Serbian authorities refer to the protests that have been taking place in Serbia for several months now, which are being organized to demand responsibility for the deaths of 15 people after the collapse of a concrete shelter at a railway station in Novi Sad.
Serbia has so far resisted Western calls to impose sanctions on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine. Its EU accession negotiations have been stalled over its relations with Russia and its failure to impose sanctions in line with the EU's measures against Moscow over its war in Ukraine. The EU has so far imposed 16 packages of sanctions on Russia./ REL
