A shameful and alarming event has shocked public opinion in Italy, where a social media user, identified as Stefano Addeo – a German language professor in the province of Naples and associated with the Italian Ministry of Education – has shared a shocking message against the daughter of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. In his Instagram post, Addeo wished the little girl the same fate as Martina Carbonaro, a teenager who tragically lost her life in Afragola.
The reaction of the institutions was immediate. Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara pledged to identify and punish the perpetrator, stressing that "there will be no tolerance for violence and hate speech."
Meloni himself reacted with a direct message saying: "This is no longer politics. Nor anger. It is a dark and ideological hatred, which destroys every moral boundary. Politics must unite against this phenomenon."
But the attacks did not stop at the Meloni family. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi also became a target of attacks, with a disgusting comment on the "X" network, where an anonymous user addressed him, including his daughters in the same hatred.
Reactions were numerous and strong, across political lines. Arianna Meloni, the prime minister's sister, called the situation "unbearable barbarity," while Senate President Ignazio La Russa declared that "expressing hatred towards a child is inexcusable and unacceptable."
The opposition also condemned the act. Simona Malpezzi from the Democratic Party said: “It is unbelievable how far political hatred can go. Attacking a child to hit a parent is despicable.” Pierferdinando Casini added: “In a normal country, solidarity for a child should not be news.”
This event is a clear reflection of the toxic political climate that is ruling the Italian public discourse. Attacks on the children of politicians are a red line that should never be crossed. If society, institutions and the media do not react strongly and with a single voice to this moral degradation, then democracy itself risks rotting from within.
