Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy for the Middle East, said Hamas' response to the Gaza ceasefire proposal "is completely unacceptable and only sets us back."
"Hamas should accept the framework proposal we have presented as a basis for proximity talks, which we can begin as soon as next week," Witkoff wrote in a post on X.
"This is the only way we can conclude a 60-day ceasefire agreement in the coming days, in which half of the living hostages and half of those who have died will return home to their families, and in which we can conduct substantial negotiations in good faith in the upcoming talks to achieve a permanent ceasefire ," he said.
Hamas said it presented a response to the proposal that would see the release of 10 live Israeli prisoners held in Gaza and the return of 18 bodies in exchange for a number of Palestinian prisoners. The Palestinian group stressed that its response was within a framework that would ensure a permanent ceasefire, a complete and comprehensive withdrawal of the Israeli military from the Gaza Strip and the free flow of humanitarian aid.
