Violence in the cities of England, right-wing demonstrations break out; more

More than 90 people were arrested after far-right demonstrations turned into riots in cities across the UK on Saturday.

Many shops were looted and police officers raided in areas including Hull, Liverpool, Bristol, Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent, Blackpool and Belfast. Other smaller demonstrations did not turn violent.

The prime minister has vowed to give police forces the government's "full support" to take action against "extremists" who try to "sow hatred".

Tensions have been high after three young women were killed at a party in Southport, Merseyside, on Monday.

In Liverpool, bricks, bottles and a flare were thrown at police, one officer was hit over the head with a chair, and another was kicked.

Several hundred demonstrators gathered outside Liverpool's Lime Street station at lunchtime, calling for unity and tolerance, chanting "refugees are welcome here" and "Nazi scum, off our streets".

They marched to the city's riverfront to confront about a thousand anti-immigration protesters, some of whom shouted Islamophobic slurs.

Police struggled to keep both sides of the protesters at bay and reinforcements were called in to maintain order.

Riots continued into the early hours of Sunday morning, with fireworks being fired at police officers.

A library was set on fire in the Walton area of the city and protesters tried to prevent firefighters from putting it out, Merseyside Police said. Many shop windows were smashed and many wheelie bins were burnt.

A number of officers were injured, where they ended up in the hospital with serious injuries.
