Blinken's "failed" diplomacy does not convince Netanyahu, Israel

US diplomatic efforts to stop the conflict in the Middle East do not seem to be very successful.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken started today his third visit to the Middle East since the October 7 attacks. This afternoon, he met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at his office in Ramallah, in the West Bank.

He met Benjamin Netanyahu and his war cabinet earlier in Jerusalem before traveling to meet Abbas, who has led the Palestinian Authority since 2005.

His spokesman said Blinken told Israeli leaders they must ensure Palestinian civilians in southern Gaza are safe and their humanitarian needs are met before resuming military operations there.

Matthew Miller added that Blinken called for immediate steps to be taken to hold violent Jewish settlers accountable for attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank.

" Secretary Blinken reiterated that the United States remains committed to tangible steps to advance a Palestinian state that lives in peace, freedom and security alongside Israel ," said spokesman Matt Miller.

On the other hand, contrary to the claims of Blinken's spokesman, Benjamin Netanyahu later issued a statement saying that he was determined to eliminate Hamas and that he had informed Blinken of this.

"I just finished a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, shortly after Hamas killers killed Israelis here in Jerusalem, and I said to him: This is the same Hamas. This is the same Hamas that carried out the terrible massacre on October 7, the same Hamas trying to kill us everywhere. I told him: We swore and swore to eliminate Hamas. Nothing will stop us. We will continue this fight until we achieve three goals - free all our hostages, to completely eliminate Hamas and ensure that Gaza never again faces such a threat ," Netanyahu said in his statement.

US diplomatic efforts to stop the conflict in the Middle East do not seem to be very successful. Even the ceasefire achieved so far seems to be endangered by the sporadic acts and attacks being carried out by both sides. A resumption of fighting would be disastrous for the people of Gaza and a major international embarrassment for the US and Israel.
