The Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, in his speech at the OSCE Ministerial Council in Skopje, has severely accused this organization, saying that it has become a tool of the EU.
Lavrov also said that it is the OSCE's fault that, according to him, they have brought this division to the OSCE.
"It is your fault that you brought about this division of the OSCE, the very initiators of this idea are killing the OSCE. It has been traditional for us to give positive speeches, but this is no longer happening, because the OSCE has become a tool of the EU," he said.
Meanwhile, during his speech, the US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, James O'Brien, called on Russia to end the violation of OSCE principles.
"I add my voice, with that of my colleagues, who call on Russia to end the violation of the basic principles of this organization, but I am not sure if it is still ready to listen to us," he said. O'Brien.
He emphasized that despite those countries that have tried to block the organization's work, the OSCE will continue to function.
"Now it is the choice of the states that have tried to block the work of this organization, to see their readiness if they will stay with the civilized community, based on the final act of Helsinki, or if they want to continue their obstacles. The OSCE will be fine, still, but it is important for them to choose if they will continue to be with us in this effort", O'Brien stated.
The summit of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) started in Skopje, North Macedonia, with the participation of 57 member countries of the organization, including the head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov.
Lavrov arrived in the Macedonian capital, Skopje, in the early hours of November 30. The Russian diplomat's participation was made possible by Skopje and Sofia, which temporarily suspended sanctions imposed by the European Union on Russian aircraft flights due to Russian aggression against Ukraine.
This caused many debates and reactions, whether Russia, by participating in this summit, is benefiting and strengthening its position on the international stage, despite the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine and the Baltic states, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as a sign of dissatisfaction, have boycotted the summit, not sending the Ministers of Foreign Affairs to the Ministerial Council.
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken also arrived in Skopje and attended an informal dinner and family photo on Wednesday evening. The chief American diplomat left after dinner, thus avoiding a confrontation with his Russian counterpart, Lavrov.
After the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia and the chairman of the OSCE, Bujar Osmani, the American diplomat congratulated Skopje for the successful chairmanship of the OSCE, while he also welcomed the selection of Malta as the next chairman of this organization during the year 2024.
