Palestinians flee from northern Gaza to the south after the Israeli army issued an unprecedented evacuation warning for a population of more than 1 million people.

The Israeli military has warned 1.1 million people living in northern Gaza to evacuate their homes as Israel steps up its revenge offensive against Hamas following the group's October 7 terror attacks that killed 1,300 people.

Israel's evacuation order caused tens of thousands of people to flee their homes in Gaza on Friday, according to the UN humanitarian office.

Israeli troops conducted local raids in the Gaza Strip, searching for hostages and gathering evidence to find people captured by Hamas, the Israel Defense Forces said on Friday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to "root out" Hamas and said Israel's counter-offensive in Gaza "is only the beginning".

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the situation in Gaza has reached "a new dangerous level" and called for immediate humanitarian access to allow fuel, food and water to reach those in need. "Even wars have rules ," Guterres told reporters. The UN Security Council discussed the crisis in a closed-door meeting on Friday.

At least 1,900 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza by Israeli strikes, including 614 children and 370 women, according to the Gaza health ministry on Friday. At least 16 Palestinians were shot and killed in the West Bank during the day, the Palestinian health ministry said.

Israeli airstrikes on convoys leaving Gaza City killed 70 people, mostly women and children, the Hamas press office said. Hamas said the vehicles were hit in three places as they headed south from Gaza City on Friday.

US President Joe Biden said he had spoken to the families of Americans held by Hamas in Gaza and that they were "going through agony" not knowing the fate of their loved ones. He told CBS: "We're going to do everything in our power to find them... we're working like hell on it."

Tens of thousands of protesters have gathered across the Middle East and parts of Asia, Europe and the US in support of the Palestinians and condemnation of Israel as it intensified its attacks on Gaza.

Jewish communities in the US, France and other countries also held rallies on Friday in solidarity with Israel. Some governments have increased security at synagogues and Jewish schools, fearing that the protests could lead to violence.

One journalist was killed and six others wounded after an Israeli shell hit a gathering of international journalists covering border clashes in southern Lebanon on Friday.

Reuters confirmed that its videographer Issam Abdallah was killed.

Meanwhile, the BBC said its journalists were attacked and held at gunpoint after being stopped by Israeli police in Tel Aviv.
