"I would spit in my own face," Vučić refuses invitation to
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has declined an invitation to attend the ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of Montenegro's independence, making strong statements against the celebrations organized by Podgorica.

"I will not go to the grand celebration of secession from my Serbia. I would be ashamed and spit in the face of myself and my people, while they can celebrate whatever they want,"  Vučić said during a communication with reporters.

The Serbian president said that a big party was being organized in Montenegro with the participation of international artists, including Ricky Martin, but according to him, what is being celebrated is leaving Serbia.

“I see that they are very happy to have left the Serbs and Serbia, I wish them the best of luck,” Vučić said. He also added that he does not find it surprising that the European Union does not insist on the use of the Serbian language in Montenegro.

"Let them continue their work, I wish them all the happiness in the world, while Serbia moves forward and achieves great successes in the economic progress of our country," declared the Serbian president.

Following Vučić's statements, the Montenegrin Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted, describing his comments as rhetoric that does not help good neighborly relations and mutual respect between the two states.

"We remind you that Montenegro did not 'separate' from Serbia, nor has it ever been part of Serbia in the sense that President Vučić is trying to present. On the contrary, Montenegro and Serbia were equal members of the state union created after the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia, and with the restoration of its independence, Montenegro enabled Serbia to continue as an independent state. For this reason, it is unacceptable and politically irresponsible for the anniversary of the restoration of Montenegro's independence to be presented as an act directed against Serbia or the Serbian people," the official response states.

The statement also emphasizes that Montenegro celebrates independence as an expression of the free will of its citizens and the right to democratically decide on the future of the country.
