Marco Rubio joined US President Donald Trump on an official visit to China, following an unusual solution used by Chinese authorities to avoid obstacles related to sanctions against him.
According to international reports, Beijing has changed the way Rubio's surname is written in Chinese, using the variant "Lu". The change has allowed sanctions approved in 2020 to remain formally in force for the previous name, while the US secretary can make official visits to China.
The character used in the new version of the name has sparked reactions, as in some interpretations it is associated with meanings such as "reckless" or "harsh", writes "The Times".
Rubio was placed under sanctions by China while he was a senator because of his criticism of Beijing's policies in Xinjiang and Hong Kong. He had accused Chinese authorities of human rights abuses and repression of pro-democracy protesters.
After his appointment as Secretary of State in the Trump administration, Chinese authorities began using a different transliteration of his name in official documents and communications. Diplomats and analysts have interpreted the move as a way to maintain sanctions without blocking diplomatic contacts between the two countries.
During the trip to Beijing, Rubio also drew attention for the Nike tracksuit he wore on Air Force One. On the social network X, White House communications director Steven Cheung published a comment comparing it to a similar outfit previously worn by Nicolás Maduro.
