It will last 6 days, the state funeral for former President Carter begins

The six-day funeral for former President Jimmy Carter began Saturday in Georgia, where he died Dec. 29 at age 100.

The first activities reflect his climb up the political ladder, starting from the town of Plains, Georgia, and up to decades on the global stage as a humanitarian and democracy activist.

First the tribute to Mr. Carter's deep roots in rural south Georgia

The ceremonies, broadcast live in the United States, began Saturday morning with the arrival of the Carter family at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus.

Former Secret Service agents protecting Mr. Carter walked alongside the hearse as it left the campus on its way to Plains Township.

James Earl Carter Jr. lived more than 80 of his 100 years in the town, which still has fewer than 700 residents, no more than when he was born on Oct. 1, 1924. Several other modern-day presidents — such as Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton — also grew up in small towns, but Mr. Carter is notable for returning and staying in his hometown long after the presidency.

The motorcade moved through downtown Plains, which spans just a few blocks, passing the girlhood home of first lady Rosalynn Smith Carter, who died in November 2023 at age 96, and near where the warehouses of family-owned peanut. Along the way is the old train depot that served as Jimmy Carter's 1976 presidential campaign headquarters and the gas station that was once run by his younger brother, Billy.

The motorcade passed the church where the Carters were married in 1946 and the house where they lived and died. The former President will be buried there along with his wife Rosalynn.

The Carters built the bungalow, now surrounded by Secret Service fences, before his first campaign for the Georgia state Senate in 1962 and lived out their lives there, except for four years at the Governor's Mansion and four of other years in the White House.

The procession also stopped at the childhood home of former President Carter, a farm in Archer, which is now part of the "Jimmy Carter" National Historical Park.

Next, the motorcade heads to Atlanta, where it will stop at the Georgia State Capitol, where Mr. Carter served as a senator and then as governor. Afterwards, there will be a private service at the Carter Presidential Center, which will be followed by a public tribute ceremony, which will continue until Monday.

Former President Carter's casket will be brought to the nation's capital, Washington, where tributes will be paid on Thursday in the lobby of the United States Capitol, followed by a funeral at the Washington National Cathedral. All former Presidents have been invited to the ceremony and the speech will be delivered by President Joe Biden.

His body will then be returned to Plains, Georgia for a private funeral service at Maranatha Baptist Church, where Mr. Carter himself, a dedicated evangelist, taught catechism classes. Former president Carter will be buried in a private ceremony near the house./ VOA
