Mexican cartel boss Nemesio Oseguera, known as "El Mencho," spent his final hours in a luxury villa hidden inside the exclusive Tapalpa Country Club, an area surrounded by vacation homes in the hills of the western state of Jalisco in Mexico.

The two-story mansion at number 39 with stone walls and a red-tiled roof served as a discreet hideout for the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), who died on Sunday after a military ambush in the woods behind the house.

Cabinets in one room were filled with treatments for a variety of ailments, including migraines, insomnia, acid reflux and yeast infections, along with a facial brush. One piece bore the logo of Mayorquin, a luxury jewelry boutique in Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco.

Bottles of Tationil Plus, an antioxidant marketed for cellular protection, were found next to a dosing chart in a refrigerator.

On the dining room table was a small box wrapped in a bright red ribbon.

Figures of Catholic saints appeared on a makeshift altar, including Mexico's patron saint, the Virgin of Guadalupe, and the patron saint of lost causes, St. Jude Thaddeus. A biblical passage affirming faith in God was handwritten on a white sheet of paper.

The villa is located in Tapalpa, known for its ecotourism, pine forests and weekend homes clustered near a golf course and a lake.

On Tuesday, a gardener tended to plants at the entrance to the community, and in the distance could be seen plantations of agave plants used to produce Mexico's famous tequila.

Oseguera tried to flee through the back garden of his home towards a wooded hill. He was hit by gunfire during the pursuit and died of his wounds while being transported by helicopter, Mexican authorities said.

Despite its postcard image, Tapalpa has attracted international attention before. A decade ago, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on several businesses in the area, alleging they were used to launder money for the CJNG and its financial arm, Los Cuinis.
