At the extraordinary session of the United Nations General Assembly, on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the full Russian occupation of Ukraine, a resolution was adopted, drafted mainly by Kiev and supported by several European countries, calling for an "immediate, complete and unconditional ceasefire" as well as a "lasting, just and comprehensive peace" in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.
The resolution was adopted with 107 votes in favor, 12 against, and 51 abstentions. Among the countries that voted against were Russia, Belarus, Iran, North Korea, as well as several other countries such as Cuba, Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Nigeria, and Sudan.
Meanwhile, the United States chose to abstain, a decision that marks a change from previous positions of past administrations and that comes in the context of the Trump administration's new policy after returning to power in January 2025.
Among the 51 abstaining countries are Armenia, Brazil, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Uzbekistan, China, India and several other countries.
According to the US representative to the UN, Ambassador Tammy Bruce, the reason for the abstention is related to several paragraphs of the resolution that, according to Washington, could hinder ongoing negotiations and limit the space for broader diplomatic solutions.
