Patience is needed in U.S. efforts to negotiate peace between Russia and Ukraine, but "we have no time to waste," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said today, warning Moscow not to present an unrealistic ceasefire proposal.
" They agreed that they would exchange documents on ideas that lead to a ceasefire. If these documents have ideas that are "realistic and rational, then I think we know we have made progress.
"If these documents, on the other hand, have demands that we know are unrealistic, then we will have a different assessment. An element of patience is required. On the other hand, we have no time to waste, so we do not want to get involved in this endless negotiation process ," Rubio said, after Russian and Ukrainian delegations met in Turkey on Friday.
The secretary of state expressed optimism that President Donald Trump's plan to speak directly on the phone tomorrow with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin could resolve the "stalemate."
Rubio did not say whether a face-to-face meeting is still being planned, but noted that Trump has offered. As talks continue, Rubio suggested that the administration will not block the Senate from considering new sanctions on Russia. The sanctions bill is being led by Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham.
