Once upon a time there was a motor show: What started in 1897 in Berlin as the International Motor Show (IAA), stayed there for nearly 50 years and was then headquartered in Frankfurt am Main for seven decades. But now it belongs to history. Two years ago – still under Corona conditions – the organizer, the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), completely revamped the concept in an effort to ensure the fair's survival as a "world's only mobility platform". in a new location: right next to Munich.
On September 5, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will open the fair. And every time it appears, the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) declares that it is no longer about cars as such, but about "urban mobility", about "mobility ecosystems" and no longer about a single transport. It is possible that these verbal jokes are intended to divert attention from the fact that not so many car manufacturers come to Munich anymore, but many more bicycle manufacturers.
Towards conquering the European market
Of course, German national manufacturers will not miss the opportunity to appear in the Bavarian capital: first of all BMW, based in Munich, but also Volkswagen and Mercedes Benz.
But the list runs out quickly: Renault from France is there, luxury electric car maker Lucid from the US and Rimac, a noble sports car maker from Croatia. The European Stellantis Group sends only Opel to the German subsidiary from its extensive portfolio. Newcomer Vinfast, from Vietnam, withdrew its commitment shortly before the start of the fair.
But what should be particularly interesting is the presentation of the Chinese manufacturer BYD (Build Your Dreams). The Shenzhen company – which recently replaced Volkswagen as the market leader in China – wants to launch its European market conquest in Munich, where it plans to introduce six vehicles at the same time.
In Munich, the Chinese will present SEAL U and its luxury sub-brand DENZA as a European premiere. BYD, which made it big as a developer of smartphone batteries, takes advantage of this very advantage: the battery in BYD cars does not require nickel, cobalt or manganese and is relatively cheap to produce. When it comes to software and technical tricks for electric vehicles, the Chinese have long been the benchmark, at least in their home market.
Although Chinese electric cars are still a rarity on German roads (according to the Automotive Management Center, only 1,448 BYDs are on the road, compared to 207,000 VWs), the situation could change quickly, especially since for Chinese cars, as for many products other prices also fall. Manufacturers from Japan and South Korea, which came to Europe in the 1980s and 1990s, should serve as an example (warning): once they were laughed at, they are now as much a part of the everyday scene on German roads as a VW Golf.
But to prevent everyone from talking only about the Chinese, the organizers have invested a lot of effort in attracting to Munich the pioneer of electric cars Tesla, which otherwise only turns to domestic events to present its products. Tesla will be present at the so-called Open Space in the center of Munich and will show there the revised Model 3.
It is important to know that the concept of the fair envisages two locations: on the one hand, the aforementioned Open Space at various points in the city center for the general public and, on the other hand, the fair grounds on the outskirts of the city for professional visitors .According to the organizers, the pavilions are 90% reserved. BYD is present in both countries.
In this sense, the fair will once again revolve around the automobile and who is ahead in the race for electric vehicles. For the Chinese market, the answer seems clear: studies predict a market share of 65% for domestic manufacturers in 2030.
For those who find all this too much, that there is a lot of talk about vehicles, they can ride a bike in Munich as well. In the English garden, the "green lung" of Munich, there will be a four-kilometer test track for bicycles of all types. And those for whom the car is the literal enemy will also be present. Several action alliances have already announced a large demonstration and blockades and other disruptive actions./DW
