The first lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, has spoken about the war and how it has affected her life and family. Volodymyr Zelensky's wife says it was very difficult for her to see her children living in uncertainty and not having any opportunity to plan for their future.
Olena Zelenska also talks about the missing time they spend together as a family.
"This may be a bit selfish, but I need my husband, not a historical figure, by my side," she said in an interview with the BBC.
When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Olena Zelenska spent months hiding in secret locations with her children. She described her emotional state at the beginning of the invasion as "a constant feeling of adrenaline". Over time, she realized that it was "necessary" to calm down and start living life in the "existing conditions".
After coming out of 'isolation' last year, the war thrust the former screenwriter into the spotlight and she has since traveled the world to meet leaders and give speeches.
"My husband and I do not live together, the family is separated. We have the opportunity to see each other, but not as often as we would like. My son misses his father. But we stay strong, we have strength both emotionally and physically. And I'm sure we'll get through it together. However, the uncertainty of living in war has come at an emotional cost to her children. It hurts me to see my children not planning anything. At such an age, young people. My daughter is 19 years old. They dream of travel, of new sensations, emotions. She does not have such an opportunity," she said.
The first lady and Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, fell in love in high school and went on to work together in a comedy troupe and television studio, he as an actor and she as a screenwriter.
Now, she reflects that she never dreamed her husband would become the "historical figure" he is today, saying she missed him and needed him to be by her side as a husband.
Despite calling it a "selfish" desire, Olena Zelenska said the president "really has energy, will, inspiration and stubbornness to go through this war.
"I believe in it. And I support it. I know I have enough strength. For any other person I know, I think this situation would be much more difficult. He really is a very strong person," she concluded.
