Former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has opposed Ukraine's hasty membership of the European Union, citing the widespread corruption he says prevails in the war-torn country.
" Anyone who has had anything to do with Ukraine knows that this is a corrupt country at all levels of society. Despite the efforts, the country is not ready for EU integration, there is a need for massive reform processes within the country ", said the former president of the EC, in an interview with the German newspaper Augsburger Allgemeine, as he added that the EU had bad experiences with some of the " the so-called new members and how this mistake should not be repeated.
"False promises should not be made to the Ukrainian people, who are suffering a lot. But a European perspective must be maintained for Moldova and Ukraine" , he concluded.
Meanwhile, in an interview published on Wednesday in the German magazine Der Spiegel, the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, stated that Ukraine can join the EU by 2030.
