Left wins Norwegian election, right-wing populists see frightening rise

Norway's Labor Party has secured a second term in power after a bloc of center-left parties narrowly won the country's general election on Monday.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre's party and its left-wing allies won 87 of the 169 seats in parliament with almost all votes counted, while opposition parties on the right took 82 seats as the Conservatives recorded one of their worst election performances in decades.

Addressing jubilant Labour Party supporters in Oslo on Monday evening, Støre said the result showed that it is "possible for the Social Democrats to win the election even when right-wing forces are on the rise in Europe," Norwegian media outlet VG reported.

The right-wing populist Progress Party achieved its best result in the national elections, doubling its share of the vote to around 24 percent and leaving the Conservatives only the third largest force in parliament.

Conservative leader Erna Solberg said she took personal responsibility for her party's poor result.

The result means that Støre is likely to form a government with the support of four other left-wing parties.

This comes after a fierce campaign dominated by debates over the cost of living, wealth taxes, the future of Norway's $2 trillion sovereign wealth fund and the country's relationship with US President Donald Trump.

Earlier on Monday, Støre said rising prices had been at the forefront of voters' minds, as well as foreign affairs issues, such as the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

Støre has been prime minister of a minority center-left coalition government since the last election in 2021.

Støre's improvement in the polls this year is closely linked to the return to government of former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who became finance minister in February.

Within days of his appointment, dubbed the "Stoltenback effect," the Labor Party rose by 10 percentage points.
