A shocking event has been recorded in Ecuador.
Thirteen prisoners were found dead in a prison in southwestern Ecuador, where several murders have recently been committed, the SNAI correctional service announced.
In total, 44 people have lost their lives in this prison within a month.
According to SNAI, the causes of death will be determined by autopsy. The bodies were found yesterday by police officers who entered the Macala prison after an explosive device was activated outside it.
About a month ago, 31 people were killed in this prison, some of them drowning. At the end of September, 14 more were killed in armed clashes.
Ecuador's prisons have become bases for rival drug gangs, with clashes between them killing almost 500 people since 2021.
In 2024, prisons were placed under the control of the army, after President Daniel Noboa declared a state of armed conflict against about 20 criminal organizations linked to international drug cartels.
However, last August, eight of them, including Macala's, were transferred to the police. The worst riots at a correctional facility occurred in 2021, when over 100 inmates were killed in a prison in Guayaquil.
