A serious incident has been recorded in Peru, after a well-known journalist was executed while returning from work.
Fernando Nunez, who covered high-level corruption cases, was shot dead by two suspected hitmen while riding a motorcycle with his brother. Nunez is the third journalist believed to have been killed by organized crime in Peru in 2025, following the killings of journalists Gaston Medina and Raul Celis. The ANP called for investigators to highlight Nunez's journalistic work as a key motive for the crime.
The latest incident "reveals an intolerable escalation of violence against those exercising the right to information. Every life taken not only represents a direct attack on journalism, but also on democracy and the citizen's right to be informed," the ANP said.
Violent crime has been on the rise in Peru, where 1,888 murders were reported in the 2025 years through the end of October, a 13% increase compared to the same period last year.
Peru has seen a rise in crime in recent years, with organized crime and extortion-related murders on the rise due to high levels of poverty and unemployment following the pandemic, along with political instability and increased gang violence.
