Peace plan talks, Zelensky welcomed by Starmer in London; Merz and Macron

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in Downing Street this Monday, December 8, for talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Zelensky was welcomed to Downing Street by Keir Starmer.

The leaders will discuss the latest peace plan for Ukraine, drafted during talks between Ukrainian and American officials in Florida last week.

Opening the meeting, British Prime Minister Starmer stressed the need for a just and lasting peace agreement for Ukraine. For his part, Zelenskyy thanked Starmer for organizing the meeting. He said it was an important moment to discuss all the "delicate" issues.

As The Guardian reports, Zelenskyy spoke about the importance of unity between Europe, Ukraine and the US. He said there are things “that we cannot manage without the Americans… we cannot manage without Europe.”

Macron, for his part, said that "we all support Ukraine and peace," adding that "we have a lot of cards in our hands," as he spoke about the options that Europe has and the increasingly suffering Russian economy. He stressed the need to find a way for Europe and the US to come closer to agreeing on a way forward.

Merz stressed that these could be “decisive” days “for all of us” regarding Ukraine. He mentioned the US-led peace talks and said that “we are and remain strongly on the side of Ukraine,” adding that “the fate of this country is the fate of Europe.”

The German Chancellor expressed "skeptical" about "some of the details that come in the documents from the American side" and that this is what he wants to talk about with other leaders.

The meeting between the leaders then continued behind closed doors.

On Sunday evening, Donald Trump said that Zelenskyy’s negotiators “liked” the new plan. But he added: “I have to say I’m a little disappointed that President Zelenskyy hasn’t read the proposal yet, at least as of a few hours ago.” As Trump made the comments, Zelenskyy said he would be briefed by his negotiators, adding that “some issues can only be discussed face to face.”
