Tony Blair

The British newspaper "The Telegraph" has blacklisted Tony Blair. The former Prime Minister was yesterday in a meeting at the White House, on the plan for the future of Gaza. According to the media, he seems to be part of Jared Kushner's business plan to build resorts on the flats that are now being razed. Blair is also known as an advisor to Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.

The scene could have seemed like a 'soul-touching' scene. In the Oval Office of the White House, some 10,000 kilometers from the ruins and misery of Gaza, Donald Trump gathered advisers to discuss the "future" of the devastated territory. And who was present? Tony Blair. (Advisor to Edi Rama).

The former British prime minister, known for his role in Middle Eastern disasters, seems to have turned intervening in traumatized territories into a profession. And while it would be merely ironic to say that the people of Gaza suffered enough before Blair returned with his “benevolent interventions,” what follows is more serious.

Blair, during his tenure as the UK's Middle East envoy (2007–2015), witnessed not one but three major wars in Gaza. A dark record for someone who was supposed to stop the conflict.

But if we stop there, we would miss the point. Because the problem is not Tony Blair, nor any missing peace plan. The great illusion is to think that there is an “ideal envoy” or a “perfect plan” that can solve Gaza.

The truth is much bleaker: the Gaza issue has probably passed the point of no return, and what comes next can only be a perpetual conflict, without solution, without end. Saying this is neither constructive nor optimistic, but it is necessary.

While Trump and Blair were discussing in Washington, the reality on the ground was changing rapidly. Israeli forces were encircling Gaza City, with a clear objective: to take control of the entire urban area and displace nearly a million Palestinians from their homes.

No one knows how this war, the longest and bloodiest in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict since 1948, will end. But one thing is certain: in the end, about two million Palestinians will be left, traumatized, impoverished, in tents or on rubble.

Yes, a way will be found to get humanitarian aid in. Some formula will be found to create a new, non-Hamas administration to manage the few areas that will remain inhabited. But this will not be a solution. It will be a temporary bandage on a wound that will no longer heal.

The Trump administration, according to Axios’ sources, has only one goal: managing the aftermath, not preventing conflict. One US official mentioned “expanding the food plan, increasing the amount and distribution of aid.” Steve Witkoff, the president’s personal envoy, spoke of a “comprehensive plan,” but clarified that it would only cover “the day after the war.”

So the US is not offering peace, but a post-war bandage. And when that bandage falls off, as it always does, the violence will return.

So forget Tony Blair. What should weigh heavily on our hearts is the bitter truth: this conflict has become insoluble, no matter who tries to “fix” it. /Adapted from “Pamphlet” by “The Telegraph”
