Harvard-educated: who is Xi Mingze, Xi Jinping's mysterious daughter, and
Xi Mingze and Xi Jinping

From schooling to staying away from social media, the mystery of the Chinese leader's daughter...

She has spent most of her life out of the spotlight. She has only been seen in public on a few official occasions, and her profile has been carefully guarded. Xi Mingze is no ordinary 33-year-old; she is the daughter of Xi Jinping, the president of China and one of the most powerful men in the world.

Recently, however, the young woman has made a rare appearance that has brought back attention to her mysterious profile. In July, cameras caught her at a banquet held in Beijing, in Zhongnanhai, the center of power of the Chinese Communist Party.

The incident occurred during the visit of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who was on his fifteenth state visit to China. Xi Jinping had prepared a special reception for his friend, and, quite unexpectedly, his daughter also attended. Her presence was interpreted by some as an indirect signal to the United States, while others read it as a protocol error.

The source of the news was the official Belarusian news agency, BelTA, which published photos of the meeting and a significant statement: “Xi, greeting Lukashenko, said to him, ‘Dear friend, our relationship is special. That is why today we are having dinner as a family, and for the first time my daughter is attending a dinner with a foreign leader.’” The statement, according to media reports, was attributed to the deputy prime minister of Minsk, Nikolai Snopkov. The photos clearly showing Xi Mingze were later removed from the agency’s website, which also noted that the dinner was also attended by the wife of the Chinese president, Peng Liyuan.

Official Chinese media remained silent. The question remains why Xi Mingze showed up to meet Lukashenko. Some analysts believe her presence was a way for Beijing to send an indirect message to Washington.

It has been reported in the past that Xi Mingze planned to return to Harvard, where she graduated in philosophy in 2014, to continue her academic education. This return would also serve as a silent channel of communication between the American and Chinese academic elites. But Donald Trump's decision to ban the entry of new foreign students, including those from Harvard, for six months prevented this possibility. Consequently, the fact that China publicly announced Xi Mingze's presence can be seen as a signal to the United States: Xi's daughter has no intention of returning to Harvard, regardless of American policies.

Very little is known about her life. Xi Mingze was born on June 25, 1992, in the city of Fuzhou, Fujian province. She has no brothers or sisters. Some sources claim that she studied French language and literature in China, before enrolling at Harvard under a false name to protect her identity.

She keeps a very low public profile. She does not give interviews, does not use social media, and her life is closely monitored by Chinese authorities. Apart from the recent banquet, her public appearances have been few: in 2008 she worked as a volunteer for a week after the earthquake in Sichuan, while in 2013 she appeared with her parents during Chinese New Year celebrations in the village of Liangjiahe. Today, amid academic tensions between the US and China, her name has returned to the spotlight. /Adapted from “Pamphlet” by “Inside Over”
