US President Joe Biden will meet with China's president on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in Peru on Saturday, the White House has confirmed.
This will be the US president's last meeting with Xi Jinping, a senior administration official said.
The two leaders are expected to take stock of how the countries have developed their "areas of common interest" over the past four years, the official added.
" This is a difficult, complicated and consequential relationship, and the president has been quite clear that even in the midst of the competitive aspects of the relationship, we must find a way to manage it responsibly ," they added.
Senior administration officials would not speculate on how President-elect Donald Trump should handle the relationship, but they highlighted areas of concern.
" Russia, cross-strait issues, the South China Sea and cyber are areas that the next administration will have to think carefully about. These are areas of deep political differences with China, and I don't expect that to go away ," they said. .
