Donald Trump, still without taking the mandate of the President, has experienced the taste of "betrayal" on the part of his party, a sign that shows that his extreme promises will not pass without resistance.

Republicans voted today for the president of the US Senate, but chose to avoid the name of the candidate supported by Trump.

US Senate Republicans chose John Thune as their next leader, fending off pressure from Donald Trump's supporters to pick a loyalist to the president-elect.

They chose the senator who has a close relationship with many of his Republican colleagues. The 63-year-old's victory is a sign that the Senate can retain some degree of independence from Trump.

Some of Trump's most vocal supporters have expressed concern that Thune may fall short of some of Trump's campaign promises. He currently serves as the House's number two Republican and will succeed 82-year-old Mitch McConnell.

Republicans will hold at least 52 seats in the 100-seat Senate and are on track to retain their majority in the House of Representatives.
