A murder shook the center of Barcelona on Wednesday morning, when a middle-aged man lost his life after being shot in one of the city's busiest areas.

The incident took place on Balmes Street, near Diagonal Boulevard, in front of the National Police office for issuing identity cards and passports. Dozens of citizens waiting outside the building witnessed the incident.

According to authorities, the perpetrator approached the victim, who had no identification documents with him, and shot him dead before fleeing north of the city. Security cameras have recorded a person wearing shorts and holding a bicycle helmet, who is suspected of being the perpetrator of the crime.

Shortly after the attack, the Catalan police, the Mossos d'Esquadra, found the weapon used in the crime in the Gràcia area. According to investigators, the perpetrator had hidden the pistol under the helmet of his bicycle, left under a bench at a bus stop in the Plaza Gal·la Placídia.

Security forces immediately cordoned off the crime scene and placed a protective tent over the victim's body. The body was removed from the scene at around 12:30 p.m., in the presence of the head of the investigation, Ramon Chacón, and judge Luis Martínez.

The incident coincides with Pope Leo XIV's planned visit to Catalonia on Wednesday evening. However, authorities have clarified that the murder is not related to the Pope's visit and has not affected the security measures put in place for the occasion.

The killing has added to concerns about rising gun violence in the region. It is the second murder in Barcelona in less than a week, following the execution of a man in the Zona Franca area last Sunday.

According to Spanish police analyses, the increase in incidents involving firearms is mainly linked to clashes between groups involved in drug trafficking and marijuana cultivation. Last year, 93 such incidents were recorded, a 45 percent increase compared to the previous period. Since the beginning of the year, six people have lost their lives in shootings in the Barcelona region, three of them within the city itself.
