Riots erupted on the streets of Paris last night after a police officer shot dead a Franco-Algerian teenager during a traffic stop after telling him: "I'm going to put a bullet in your forehead."
The death of 17-year-old Nael M. during a police check sparked angry protests in France; Trash cans, cars and public buildings burned in the suburbs of Paris on Tuesday evening.
The unrest, which began on Tuesday evening with a demonstration in front of the police station in Nanterre, spread to neighboring towns overnight. In Mantes-la-Jolie, for example, a town hall was set on fire and the building burst into flames. A primary school burned down in Nanterre.

The crowd erected barricades between high-rise buildings and prevented firefighters from extinguishing the fire.
Police officers used tear gas and rubber bullets, while explosive fireworks were fired at the officers. So great was the outrage that officials sometimes had to retreat in the face of mass attacks. According to the authorities, 20 people have been arrested.
Police officers initially spoke of self-defense.
According to prosecutors, the driver of a rental car was stopped in the Paris suburb of Nanterre on Tuesday morning for violating several traffic rules. Initially, it was said that the car had hit the two motorcycle policemen, who had acted in self-defense.
However, a video verified by broadcaster France Info shows a different situation. The video shows one of the officers pointing a gun at the level of the driver's door at the stationary car. The situation seems to be under control and there are no signs of aggressive movements.
But then it escalated, the 17-year-old at the wheel suddenly left. The police officer shot the young man at close range, fatally hitting him in the chest. The car collides after a few meters with a pole. The 17-year-old died shortly after, despite the efforts of rescue teams to keep him alive.
Later, the police retracted their initial version. It was now said that the young man had disobeyed the officers' orders and then accelerated suddenly - there was no longer any talk of an intent to kill.
