The director of Ecuador's largest prison in Guayaquil, a detention center often the scene of bloody inmate uprisings, was killed on Thursday, the Latin American country's penitentiary service (SNAI) said.
"Director of Detention Center No. 1 of Guyanese, Maria Daniela Ikasa Isavala, died after being attacked by armed men on the street," her agency said, adding that the official died in hospital.
The police say that they have started investigations that will enable the identification of the perpetrators of the murder, SNAI continued.
According to the same source, another service employee was injured.
Prison No. 1 of Guayas has often been marred by gang conflicts and bloody riots in recent years. In total, over 460 prisoners have been killed inside Ecuadorian prisons since 2021.
Director Icasa is the second SNAI official to be killed within the current month.
