After years of pursuing cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, Mexican authorities secured a piece of concrete information that led to Sunday’s operation in western Mexico, which ended in his death.
According to Mexico's Defense Minister Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, investigations into the network of "El Mencho," leader and co-founder of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), led on February 20 to the arrest of a key person with access to his hideout. It was the romantic partner of one of his most trusted associates.
On February 21, the woman left the cabin complex on the outskirts of Tapalpa. According to intelligence, “El Mencho” remained at the hideout along with his bodyguards.
The Mexican Air Force and the National Guard's Rapid Reaction Unit immediately drafted the operational plan, before losing track of it again.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the United States provided information-based support, without the involvement of ground forces.
The operation included ground components, airmobile units with helicopters, which did not enter Jalisco airspace to avoid raising suspicion, as well as air support.
After establishing a security perimeter, the forces launched a pursuit and exchanged fire with the cartel's subordinates. Eight cartel members were killed at the scene, while two soldiers were wounded.
As security forces approached, "El Mencho" and several of his associates retreated to a nearby wooded area.
"'El Mencho' fled, leaving behind a group with a large amount of weapons; it was a very violent attack by an organized crime group. Military forces repelled the attack," declared Minister Trevilla.
Special Forces units managed to locate "El Mencho" in the undergrowth of the forest area, concluding the operation that ended one of the most wanted drug trafficking figures in Mexico.
