Slovakia leaves Ukraine without electricity, Fico: Bring back Russian oil or you

Slovakia's Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has asked the country's electricity grid operator to cut off electricity supplies to Ukraine if the flow of oil through the Druzhba pipeline does not resume.

"Starting today, if the Ukrainian side turns to Slovakia for assistance in stabilizing Ukraine's energy network, it will not receive such assistance ," Fico declared.

He added that the measure will be lifted once oil supplies to Slovakia resume.

According to international media, the flow of Russian oil to Slovakia has been interrupted for nearly a month. Last Saturday, Fico warned that he would cut off emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine, giving Kiev a two-day deadline to restore the pumping of Russian oil through Ukrainian territory.

The Druzhba pipeline, built during the Soviet era, remains one of the main oil supply lines in Central Europe and passes through the territory of Ukraine.

Slovakia and Hungary are the only two European Union countries that continue to depend significantly on Russian oil transported via Druzhba.

Both countries are led by governments that have maintained close relations with Moscow, despite EU membership, and have often clashed with Brussels over their positions on Russia and energy policies.
