The world's largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, arrived at noon on Monday (February 23) in Crete, according to photos posted on social media.
The ship traveled about 2,700 kilometers from Gibraltar to Crete in 72 hours, at an average speed of 21 knots (about 39 km/h). It sailed towards the Gulf of Souda, where it will stay for four days for the purpose of resupply and logistical support.
Its presence at the Sudanese naval base comes as the US administration is reviewing security developments in the Middle East. Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of an aircraft carrier strike group to the region as Washington assesses its strategic options in relation to Iran.
The published photos show the aircraft carrier entering the Gulf of Souda with fighter jets deployed on deck, as part of a supply stop.
The USS “Gerald R. Ford” also attracted attention in recent months, after a deployment off the coast of Venezuela, ahead of a US operation that led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife in Caracas on January 3.
After an initial mission to Europe in late 2025 and a deployment to the Caribbean, the aircraft carrier has returned to the Mediterranean, accompanied by a significant air and naval capability, highlighting its role in projecting American military power in the region.
