NATO has stated that there is no legal provision for the suspension or expulsion of member states from the alliance, following reports that the United States may consider measures against Spain for its stance on the conflict with Iran.
According to Reuters, a US official has revealed that an internal Pentagon email has suggested the possibility that the US could take punitive steps against allies that, in its assessment, have not sufficiently supported the campaign against Iran.
A NATO official told the BBC that the alliance's founding treaty "does not contain any provision for the suspension of membership or the expulsion of a member country."
Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, dismissed the reports, stressing that the Spanish government does not rely on unofficial internal communications.
"We don't work on the basis of emails. We rely on official documents and positions, in this case of the United States government," he declared.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO allies for what he says is a lack of commitment following US and Israeli attacks on Iran in late February. Iran subsequently restricted naval movement in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy transport.
Spain has refused to allow the use of its air bases for military operations against Iran. Two important American bases are located on Spanish territory: Naval Station Rota and Morón Air Base.
