Another earthquake in Crete, residents in panic; seismologists warn of several

Another earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale was recorded in Crete at 11:10 (local time), continuing the series of strong tremors that began in the Lassithi area this morning.

The epicenter was located southeast of Goudoura, near the area where the strongest earthquake of the day with a magnitude of 5.7 was recorded at 06:18.

Following this shock, the region was hit by a series of aftershocks ranging from 3.2 to 4.1 magnitude, while at 12:26 another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 was recorded on the ground, about 9 kilometers northwest of Goudouras.

According to Greek media, the area had also shown seismic activity in recent days, with milder tremors ranging from 2 to 3.7 magnitudes.

Greek seismologist Akis Tselentis sounded a note of caution, stressing that seismic activity in the area was expected, as an increasing microseismic sequence has been recorded in recent months. He warned that there could be further tremors, but without a high risk of stronger earthquakes.

The seismologist emphasized that, due to the shallow depth of the epicenter, it is possible that "several smaller earthquakes will follow in the coming days," while adding that "with a high probability, there will be no stronger tremors."

The expert also explained that seismic activity in Crete is linked to the collision of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, making the area one of the most active in the region.

At the same time, he called for caution in the dissemination of information: citizens should avoid spreading exaggerated or inaccurate news, especially on the eve of the tourist season.
