Syria's interim prime minister is appointed

The rebel leader who helped topple Bashar al-Assad's regime has been appointed as Syria's interim prime minister, local media reported.

In a televised speech, Mohammed al-Bashir announced that he would remain in office until March 1 to lead the transitional government.

Al-Bashir, who has ruled Idlib province, is set to head a small cabinet to ensure public services resume. This comes after several government agencies in the country have asked civil servants and health workers to resume duties.

As reported by the National, an Abu Dhabi-based newspaper, al-Bashir governed parts of northwestern Syria (namely Idlib) as part of the Syrian Salvation Government, which is a group linked to Hayat Tahrir-al Shams (HTS ).

Earlier, the UN special envoy for Syria said it was important for all groups in Syria to work together. But Geir Pedersen added: "In general we have seen reassuring statements from HTS and the various armed groups." Although, Pedersen went on to say that "some law and order issues" remain.
