Erdogan accuses Israel of breaking the truce: We had a chance for peace but

The chance for peace after the breakdown of the cease-fire in Gaza has been lost for the time being because of Israel's uncompromising attacks, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said today, NTV television reported.

"From the beginning we emphasized that we are for a permanent ceasefire instead of a humanitarian pause. There was an opportunity for peace here and unfortunately we lost it for the moment because of Netanyahu and Israel's uncompromising attacks," Erdogan said.

The Gaza ceasefire, which began on November 24, had been extended twice, but after seven days, during which Hamas women, children and hostages were released in exchange for a number of Palestinian prisoners, mediators failed to find a way to be more free.

Israeli forces have since pounded southern Gaza, prolonging the nearly two-month war in which thousands of people have died.

Speaking to reporters on his return from the United Arab Emirates, Erdogan also said he is not giving up hope for lasting peace.

"We should focus on the two-state solution. Blocking Hamas or destroying it is not a realistic scenario," Erdogan said during the interview, adding that he would not label Hamas a terrorist organization.

As the Turkish president said, a contact group, which will consist of the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Arab League, will visit the US to discuss a possible solution to the conflict in Gaza, after meeting with authorities in London, Paris, Barcelona and the United Nations.
