Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who won a third term in Turkish presidential elections, announced the composition of the new government after being sworn in for a new five-year term as Turkey's leader.
After an official dinner attended by almost 80 presidents of states and governments, Erdogan announced the composition of the new government in which the ministries of defense, foreign affairs and economy underwent profound changes.
The new government will meet for the first time on Tuesday, he said earlier. After dinner, Erdogan went to the Cankaya presidential palace, where Mustafa Kemal Ataturk lived and worked, to announce the composition of the new government.
As expected, the well-known expert Mehmet Simsek, former Minister of Finance (2009-2015) and then Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Policies (until 2018), takes over the Ministry of Finance. The name of Mehmet Simsek, 56, appeared repeatedly in the media: the former economist of the American bank Merrill Lynch will be responsible for putting order in the country's financial policy to regain the confidence of investors.
Key ministries will also be revamped: so Hakan Fidan, the former head of MIT, the Turkish intelligence service, will take over as foreign minister, replacing Mevlut Cavusoglu. In the Ministry of Defense, Yasar Gueler, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, replaces Hulusi Akar, the former Chief of the General Staff who held this post since July 2018.
Akar was considered the mastermind of the resistance to the failed coup in July 2016. Only two ministers, Health and Culture, remain in their posts.
