Artificial intelligence systems, such as ChatGPT-4, Bard, and Baidu, are spreading rapidly throughout the Internet world. Experts and authorities are currently considering whether a legal framework will be needed to govern the production of artificial intelligence and thus avoid the potential risks that accompany it.
ChatGPT produces text by making predictions about which words would best answer a question, based on what it has acquired from a large volume of text from written works.
" The big technology that has taken the world by surprise is the so-called big language models. ChatGPT and Bard are among the examples of large model languages. The way they work is really simple. They act exactly like your mobile does when you start writing a message, eg. 'where are they...' and then the mobile phone suggests you how to continue the sentence" , explains Professor Michael Wooldridge, from the University of Oxford.
Often the images we see may have been created with sophisticated artificial intelligence tools and may not be real, such as the fictitious fight between former President Donald Trump and New York police officers.
" This technology is very, very good at creating fake stories. Ultimately, the goal of this technology is to produce text that sounds real. And one of the ways it can be used unscrupulously is to industrialize the production of fake stories ," says Professor Wooldridge.
Aren't the companies that come up with this artificial intelligence technology that could one day outshine humans? This is what a group of important computer science scientists think, as well as personalities like Elon Musk, or the co-founder of the Apple company, Steve Wozniak, who have called for a 6-month break. Their call came after San Francisco company Open AI released version 4 of its ChatGPT artificial intelligence program, sparking a race between giants Microsoft and Google to produce such programs.
Italy has meanwhile banned the ChatGPT artificial intelligence program and is investigating possible breaches of strict European Union data protection rules.
"First of all, there is no legal basis to collect data without permission from the Internet. And secondly, the results will not be guaranteed to be true and accurate. Therefore, inaccurate results can be obtained for individuals" , says Professor Nello Cristianini, from the University of Bath.
American company OpenAI has blocked Italian users' access to the ChatGPT program, following a request from the Italian government, and believes its practices are in line with European privacy laws.
Some governments are trying to draft legislation for artificial intelligence tools. Britain published a document outlining its approach, and the adoption of comprehensive rules on artificial intelligence is being negotiated in the European Union. President Biden's administration wants stronger measures to test the safety of artificial intelligence tools before they are made available to the public.
" Maybe we need a regulatory system. People who put these products out need to be really careful about how they put them out and what they advertise them for. We as users also need to be careful and make sure we don't trust systems more than we need to ," says Anthony Cohen, professor of automated reasoning at Leeds University.
Artificial intelligence technology is already becoming more and more intertwined with our daily lives. Two media in Kuwait, "Kuwait News" and "Kuwait Times", presented their first virtual presenter, created by artificial intelligence. She has been given the popular Arabic name Fedha, which translates to silver, and appears on screen to inform viewers./ VOA
