A woman once dubbed "Australia's worst murderer" has been released from prison after new evidence found that she did not kill her four young children.
Kathleen Folbigg spent 20 years in prison after a jury found she killed Caleb, Patrick, Sarah and Laura.
But according to a recent investigation, the children died of natural causes. The 55-year-old's case has been described as one of Australia's biggest miscarriages of justice.
Folbigg has been innocent, but in 2003 she was sentenced to 25 years for the murder of her 4 children. Each child died suddenly between 1989 and 1999, prompting prosecutors to believe she had killed them.
At the new inquest, chaired by retired judge Tom Bathurst, prosecutors accepted that the children had in fact died of natural causes. As a result, the NSW governor ordered Folbigg's immediate release from prison.
The pardon comes after a years-long campaign for Folbigg's release, sparked when a team of immunologists discovered her daughters had a genetic mutation that can cause sudden cardiac death.
Evidence was also discovered that Folbigg's sons had a different genetic mutation linked to epilepsy.
