Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in New Delhi, during which they also discussed the issue of F-16s that Turkey is seeking from the US.
In his statements after the end of the Summit, President Erdogan said: "We had a meeting with Biden. There we also discussed the issue of F-16". He repeatedly said that the issue is related to Sweden's membership in NATO," Erdogan said, according to the ERT correspondent, adding:
"If you compare the F-16 to Sweden and say they have to take into account the decision of Congress, I also have my own Congress which is the Turkish Grand National Assembly."
"Sweden must do its homework," he added, adding that "this approach seriously worries us."
We recall that Jens Stoltenberg, speaking in the Committee for Foreign Affairs and Defense of the European Parliament, said that very soon Sweden will become a full member of NATO.
He also mentioned that it has been agreed in Vilnius to issue a statement clearly stating what needs to be done by Sweden, while Turkey has made it clear that it will proceed with ratification as soon as possible, he added.
Stoltenberg underlined that this "has been repeated many times by President Erdogan. So I expect that when the Turkish parliament reconvenes later in the fall, ratification will happen as soon as possible."
