Restoring Washington-Beijing relations, President Biden meets with the Chinese

United States President Joe Biden said Sunday that he held the highest-level meeting with Chinese representatives in months, adding that Beijing is not expected to intervene in Taiwan because of economic problems.

mr. Biden said he met with President Xi Jinping's number two, Premier Li Qiang, during the G20 summit held in New Delhi, India.

It was the highest-level meeting between the two powers in nearly 10 months since Mr. Biden held talks with Mr. Xi last year during the G20 summit in Indonesia.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who took office in March, attended the meeting of world leaders in place of Mr. Xi. The two leaders were not expected to hold talks at the G20, but unscheduled meetings are common during such high-level gatherings.

"My team is still meeting with representatives of President Xi and his cabinet," Mr. Biden told reporters. "I met with his number 2 today in India," Mr. Biden said.

The two superpowers have been trying to improve the frosty relations between the two countries after the incident caused by the flight of a Chinese spy balloon over the territory of the United States, while Beijing has become involved in fears of an economic slowdown.

Speaking at the press conference in Vietnam, Mr. Biden described the American economy as the "strongest" in the world. He told reporters that China's development was slowing due to a weak global economy as well as Chinese policies, but did not specify which policies.

He described the Chinese economic situation as "in crisis" citing problems related to real estate and the high level of unemployment.

"One of the main economic principles of his plan is not working at all right now," President Biden said, referring to Mr. Xi, without elaborating. "I'm not happy about it, but it's not working."

OPEN DIALOGUE

President Biden has tried to keep the lines of communication open with China to ease disagreements over international issues, including Taiwan, the self-governing island to which Beijing has territorial claims.

"I don't think this will lead to China's intervention in Taiwan," Mr. Biden said, referring to the economic problems facing Beijing. "Actually, I think it's the opposite, the chances are that it doesn't have the same capacities it had before"./ VOA
