The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, threatened Attorney General Merrick Garland with the initiation of proceedings aimed at formally raising charges for his dismissal, related to the criminal investigation that the Department of Justice carried out against the son of President Joe Biden, Hunter Biden.
In a tweet on Sunday, Mr. McCarthy wrote that U.S. Attorney David Weiss, appointed by former President Donald Trump to oversee the investigation, must answer questions about allegations made by a whistleblower that the Justice Department interfered. in this case, with the intention of protecting Mr. Biden's son.
" If the whistleblower's allegations are true, this will be an important part of a larger investigation aimed at impeaching Merrick Garland on charges of political use of the Justice Department," Mr. McCarthy wrote .
According to court documents filed last week, Hunter Biden has agreed to plead guilty to two counts of willful evasion of income taxes.
Mr. Garland has denied claims by the whistleblower, an IRS employee, that Mr. Weiss was prevented by the Justice Department from conducting a more aggressive investigation of the president's son.
House Republicans, some eager to retaliate against Mr. Trump, have launched multiple investigations into the Biden family and administration, seeking evidence of wrongdoing.
Mr. Trump, who faces multiple investigations, a state criminal indictment as well as a federal indictment, is running for re-election in 2024.
Last week, two allies of Mr. Trump introduced two resolutions in the House of Representatives to expunge from the Congressional record the impeachment charges against the former President in 2019 over allegations that he pressured the Ukrainian government to develop investigations into the Biden family in exchange for military aid to this country. Last week, hard-line Republican House of Representatives lawmaker Lauren Boebert tried to push for a vote in the chamber to impeach President Biden on immigration and border security.
Another hard-line lawmaker, Marjorie Taylor Greene, is also pushing for impeachment proceedings against President Biden, Attorney General Garland, Secretary Mayorkas, FBI Director Christopher Wray and a US attorney who is prosecuting those involved in the attack. of January 6 against the Capitol./ VOA
