Iran has officially announced the death of Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the naval forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to statements from Iranian authorities.
"Martyr Guards Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri, who, after heavy strikes that led to the destruction of key enemy facilities and infrastructure and the downing of a US warplane, was targeted by aggressive enemies while organizing and strengthening forces and reinforcing the defensive shield of islands and coasts, succumbed to the severity of his wounds and attained union with God," the IRGC said in a statement.
According to the same sources, Tangsiri lost his life after an airstrike that Israel declared it carried out last Thursday, as part of the escalation of the conflict between Iran and Israel, involving American interests in the region.
Tangsiri was considered a key figure in Iran's naval military structure. He oversaw the IRGC's fleet operations, including the use of cruise missiles and the development of asymmetric naval capabilities. In 2019, the US Treasury Department placed him under sanctions for his military activities and role in armed drone programs.
He also had a significant role in Iran's strategy to exert pressure on the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic corridor for global oil transportation.
