Europe unhappy with Trump-Putin summit: Iron guarantees needed for Ukraine, we

Several European leaders pledged Saturday to continue supporting Ukraine and pressuring Russia until the war in the country ends, hours after a summit in Alaska between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin ended.

The joint statement from the leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, was issued after Trump briefed them on his talks with Putin.

The statement said that the next step should be talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and that they were ready to work with Trump and Zelensky towards a trilateral summit with European support.

Trump said after talks with Putin that Ukraine must reach an agreement to end the war with Russia.

He said he agreed with the Russian leader that the best way to do this was to go directly to a peace settlement rather than through a ceasefire, something that had so far been opposed by Kiev and its European allies.

The European declaration, also signed by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and European Council President Antonio Costa, says Ukraine must have "ironclad" security guarantees to protect its territorial integrity.

"It will be Ukraine's task to make decisions on its territory. International borders should not be changed by force."

Our support for Ukraine will continue. We are determined to do more to keep Ukraine strong so that we can achieve an end to the fighting and a just and lasting peace.

"As long as the killings in Ukraine continue, we stand ready to keep up the pressure on Russia. We will continue to strengthen sanctions and broader economic measures to put pressure on Russia's war economy until there is a just and lasting peace," the statement said. /Adapted from Reuters/
